Myths about Veins
"You should wait until you've had your family before getting your veins fixed"

This is advice given by most doctors and nurses still today - despite it being completely wrong as well as illogical and against the current research. As seen before on the page about the myth that pregnancy causes varicose veins - pregnancy does not cause varicose veins, but does make them worse.

Therefore the sooner the veins are fixed:

  • The less damage will be done to the skin of the lower legs by the pump failure
  • The fewer number of veins will have lost the valves so the quicker and less extensive the treatment will be
  • The smaller the extent of the inflammation so the easier the treatment and the quicker the recovery.

Why suffer during pregnancy whilst allowing the veins to worsen?

HOWEVER - and this is a big however, this will only be the case if the veins are sorted out properly - ie:

  • The operation is planned on Duplex Ultrasound findings
  • The latest techniques are used to reduce the risk of the veins re-connecting and coming back in future years - at the moment the only proven one to do this is VNUS Closure - using the Method pioneered and developed at The Whiteley Clinic (see later)
If "traditional" methods of veins surgery are used (ie: operating by guess work without duplex ultrasound and using older techniques such as tying and stripping that allow neovascularisation) then this benefit may not be found (information regarding these points will be found on our linked sites - see Links Page).
